THE SHENANDOAH AND POTOMAC IRIS SOCIETY
BEAUTIFIES THE VALLEY
Blooms
burst out all over the Shenandoah Valley, tantalizing garden
visitors with their brilliant colors and versatility. New
interpretive iris beds grace the grounds of Blandy Farm, the State
Arboretum of Virginia. Everywhere you turn at Glen Burnie Gardens,
home to the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, iris beds abound. It
has been the joy of the S&PIS to work over the past several years
with the Garden Directors of these public venues to promote the
genus iris. It was our pleasure to share the rainbow of colors with
the AIS Region 4 members at the Region 4 Spring Show and Tour of
Gardens in 2017.
These two gardens are popular tourist stops in the Shenandoah
Valley, so we hope that these iris displays will introduce many more
people to the glories of iris. Shenandoah and Potomac Iris Society
holds our annual spring show at Blandy Farm each May, and our club
iris sale there in October. We use both these opportunities to
educate the public about the immense variety of iris and the
expanded bloom time achieved through planting various types of iris
and utilizing reblooming irises (those that bloom again in the
fall).
